Locations in the Bay Area

Choosing a location for your engagement session is one of the first decisions you'll make, and it sets the tone for everything — the mood, the light, the feel of the photos. The Bay Area is full of options, and after shooting across the region for nearly a decade, these are the spots I keep coming back to.

Baker Beach, San Francisco

Baker Beach is the most requested location I shoot at, and for good reason. The Golden Gate Bridge sits directly in the background, the sand is wide and open, and the light at golden hour — roughly an hour before sunset — turns everything warm and cinematic. It's a public beach, so parking can be tricky on weekends, but arriving early solves most of it. The rocks at the northern end of the beach offer a more dramatic, textured backdrop if you want something different from the open sand.

Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco

The Palace of Fine Arts is one of those locations that looks like it belongs in Europe — grand columns, a lagoon, and warm stone that catches late-afternoon light beautifully. It works well for couples who want something more architectural and timeless. The rotunda offers dramatic framing, and the surrounding gardens give you softer, more intimate options. Weekends can get busy with tourists, so I usually recommend shooting on a weekday evening or early morning.

Allied Arts Guild, Palo Alto

Allied Arts Guild is a hidden gem — a historic Spanish Colonial arts complex in Palo Alto with courtyard gardens, a fountain, ornate iron gates, and warm stucco walls. It photographs beautifully at almost any time of day, and unlike Baker Beach it rarely feels crowded. This is a great choice for couples who want something more intimate and garden-like rather than a landmark backdrop. It's also a stunning location for surprise proposals.

Trojan Point, Mount Tamalpais

Trojan Point is a grassy ridge on the south-facing slope of Mt. Tam with wide, open views of the Pacific and the Bay Area skyline in the far distance. It's a 5-minute walk from the parking lot and gives you a long clearing with two genuinely different backdrop options — an ocean-facing circular clearing at the end of the path, and a softer grassy overlook to the right. For surprise proposals, the mix of other hikers and the easy natural cover make it one of the best setups in Marin.

Muir Woods & Marin Headlands

If you want forest light and dramatic coastal cliffs instead of cityscapes, Marin is the answer. Muir Woods offers towering redwoods and filtered green light that's unlike anything else in the Bay Area. The Marin Headlands give you sweeping views of the Golden Gate and the San Francisco skyline from the other side. Both require a bit more planning — parking reservations for Muir Woods are mandatory — but the results are worth it.

A note on timing

The single biggest factor in great outdoor photos isn't the location — it's the light. The hour before sunset (golden hour) and the 20 minutes after (blue hour) consistently produce the most beautiful results. If your date is flexible, I'll always recommend shooting around sunset over midday, regardless of which location you choose.
